PM-KISAN Scheme 1st Anniversary: Centre Pays Rs 50,850 Crore to Farmers
The Centre has paid Rs. 50,850 crore to farmers as of now under its PM-Kisan Scheme. The scheme that enables farmers to meet their farm input cost & household expenses.
Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana has completed 1 year today i.e. on February 24, 2020. Just before its first anniversary, the Agriculture Ministry has shared the progress of the scheme.
The Centre said that it has paid Rs. 50,850 crore to farmers till now under its PM-Kisan Scheme. Thus, enabling farmers to meet their farm input cost and household expenses.
The Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi was formally launched on February 24 last year by PM Narendra Modi at Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh.
What is PM-KISAN scheme?
Under the PM-KISAN scheme, the Centre transfers an amount of ₹6,000 per year, in three equal installments, directly into the bank accounts of the farmers, subject to certain exclusion criteria relating to higher income status.
This Central Sector Yojana (PM Kisan) was launched to provide income support to all landholding farmer families across the country and enable them to meet expenses related to agriculture & domestic needs.
As per the information provided by the ministry, “The Central Government has already released more than ₹50,850 crores as of now.”
Total number of beneficiaries covered under the scheme is about 14 crore, based on estimates of the Agriculture Census 2015-16.
Till 20 February, 2020, as much as 8.46 crore farmer families were given the benefits of PM Kisan Samman scheme.
It is to be noted that, the entire responsibility of identification of beneficiaries rests with the state or UT governments. Initially, PM KISAN provided income support to all small and marginal farmers’ families across the country, which holds cultivable land up to 2 hectares. However, its benefits were later expanded to cover all farmer families in the country irrespective of their land holdings.
Which farmers will not get the benefit of PM KISAN scheme?
Some affluent farmers have been excluded from the PM Kisan yojana like, income tax payers in last assessment year, doctors, lawyers, chartered accountants, engineers etc & pensioners drawing a minimum of Rs. 10,000 per month (excluding MTS/Class IV/Group D employees).
