International Women's Day

Every year on today i.e. 8th March, the world celebrates International Women's Day (IWD). But do we know what exactly International Women's Day is dedicated to? Or when was the first IWD celebrated?

What is International Women's Day?

IWD is entirely about unity, celebration, reflection, advocacy & action. It marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity.

Why International Women's Day is celebrated?

IWD is dedicated to celebrate women's achievements in the social, economic, cultural and political fields. The first IWD was celebrated on 19 March, 1911. It was chosen as it commemorated the day that the Prussian king promised to introduce votes for women in 1848.

His promise gave hope for equality but the king failed to keep it. Hence, IWD was moved to March 8 in 1913.

However, the first glimpse of IWD was seen in the year 1909. When, the socialist party of America celebrated 15,000 women who protested long work hours, low pay, & the lack of voting rights in New York City.

Which colour symbolizes women?

Internationally, the colour purple is a colour for symbolising women. Earlier, the combination of purple, green and white symbolised women's equality. Colour purple represents justice & dignity. Green symbolises hope and white signifies purity.  The theme for IWD 2020 is “Each for Equal”.
